‘This Girl Can…’
We’re thrilled to hear that one of R.E.A.L.’s own staff members has recently achieved their Level 1 in Transport Management.
Kerry Shooter, who works as a group tutor at Kingsmill Way Mechanics, wanted to achieve the diploma so she could support the learners more effectively with their practical work. Kerry has worked as a group tutor for just over a year at Kingsmill Way Mechanics, but has been part of the R.E.A.L. Education family for many more, having previously worked as a highly skilled 1:1 tutor.
Prior to joining R.E.A.L., Kerry worked for an insurance company and before that for a paint company. In 2015, Kerry decided that a career change was in order and enrolled in a Level 3 Teaching Assistant qualification at night school.
Kerry’s employer at the time allowed Kerry to have one day off a week so that she could get the experience she needed in school to achieve her qualification and Kerry worked longer hours on the other days to make up for the time off, alongside studying. Kerry also volunteered at another school to gain additional experience before securing a job at R.E.A.L.
Kerry said: “One of my 1:1 learners did mechanics and I enjoyed being there [at Kingsmill Way Mechanics] so when a job came up, I applied. I wanted to do the diploma so I could help the learners more with their practical work. The course involved doing so many units which I did at night until I had passed them all.”
Not one to stop there, Kerry is continuing to develop her skills further:
“I am now going to a bike mechanic’s garage at the weekend to learn about motorbikes with the hope of being able to bring this to mechanics, as motorbikes are my passion. I am still learning practically on cars but with the help of the team and learners, I’m getting there.”
Kerry’s manager, Antonia Germany, said: “We are so proud of Kerry and all her achievements, and have done everything we can to support her to achieve her goals. She deserves the recognition for the amazing efforts she has gone to which have not only benefited her, but has meant she can support our learners in completing their qualifications also.
“Kerry is a shining example showing that by setting goals and having determination you can achieve anything. Kerry can hold her head high and now have the confidence and understanding when teaching our young people the tricks of the trade. She is an inspiration to the learners and her peers.”
It’s always great to hear about our colleagues’ achievements. Well done Kerry from everyone at R.E.A.L.!
