R.E.A.L. Adventure Makes a Splash!

With the relaxation of Covid-19 guidelines, R.E.A.L. Adventure learners have finally been able to get back on the water – and have fully embraced the opportunity!

The learners have been paddling on local lakes, canals and the River Trent, and are all working towards their Paddlepower Awards. All R.E.A.L. Adventure learners have now completed their ‘Start’ certificates and have moved on to the next step – the Discover Awards. These awards require participants to try their skills in a number of different locations, helping to develop risk management, journey preparation and general organisation skills – whilst also broadening their horizons about the opportunities being outdoors can bring.

R.E.A.L. Adventure learners have the opportunity to paddle both kayaks and open canoes; learning how to move the boat effectively forward, backwards and sideways (and sometimes upside down!).

David Treagus, R.E.A.L. Adventure Group Tutor said: “Paddling is not only about boating skills, but also teamwork, communication and problem solving – all combined with determination and self-discovery.

“We have seen real progression in how our learners interact with each other and work together. The water has a calming influence on many learners, and with a fun and enjoyable learning environment they have really excelled.”

R.E.A.L. Adventure is licensed by the Adventure Activities Licencing Authority (AALA) and is certified to operate adventurous activities for learners, schools, private and corporate groups. Activities on offer include kayaking, abseiling, caving, mountain biking and bushcraft.
