On the Buses!

Congratulations to R.E.A.L. mechanics learner, William who has recently completed a successful work experience placement with Trent Barton buses.

William spent five weeks with the team at the Trent Barton bus depot at Sutton in Ashfield. He learnt all about maintaining buses, with a focus on passenger safety and roadworthiness.

William undertook a wide range of jobs that included checking if seats were secure and safe, finding and repairing electrical problems, repairing wheelchair access ramps, replacing worn parts, removing chassis parts and replacing wheels. An aspect of the work which particularly motivated William was completing unexpected repairs – when buses occasionally had to come in because a fault had developed, (in one case a tyre had blown out), and be returned to service as possible.

Before William could work in the depot he had to complete a health and safety induction. His depth of knowledge and ability to apply it in practical situations was very impressive, revealing how well this important aspect of the working environment had been taught to him at R.E.A.L. Education.

Martin Kirkland, Learning Manager at R.E.A.L. Education, said: “William is an enthusiastic mechanic who attends the Kingsmill Way mechanics site two days a week, and is a valued member of Antonia Germany’s great team.

“He has always been enthusiastic about mechanical engineering and took this opportunity with both hands, making the most of it. He has thoroughly enjoyed his time at Trent Barton – and even agreed to extend his work experience period by an extra week!

“This placement has really inspired William, not only in terms of his enthusiasm for mechanics, but also with a keenness to join the world of work. The teamwork and shared goals experienced in a successful workplace immediately appealed to him, as does the idea of earning a good wage!”

Trent Barton is part of the Stagecoach group, and runs buses throughout the East Midlands. The large company employs over 1000 people, and is a major employer in the East Midlands.
